Free no account no telemetry Chrome 121 or newer
Quiet Blocker for Chrome is the Chrome edition of our free, private ad and tracker blocker. It has the same filters and tools as Quiet Blocker for Firefox, rebuilt for Chrome’s Manifest V3, with every control in one side panel. There is no telemetry, no account and no “acceptable ads” programme that lets paying advertisers through.
Privacy first
- No telemetry. It sends no usage data, statistics or crash reports, and it never contacts a server of its own.
- No account and no “acceptable ads”. Everything the filter lists cover is blocked.
- No network traffic of its own. The filter lists are built into the extension. The only download is a list you add yourself by its address, fetched from its maintainer with no cookies and no referrer.
- Your settings stay in your Chrome profile on your computer. Nothing is synced or uploaded.
Full details: Quiet Blocker privacy policy.
What it blocks
- Ad and tracker requests before they load: scripts, images, frames, tracking pixels, beacons, websockets and more. Chrome does the blocking itself from the extension’s rules (Manifest V3).
- Ad elements on the page, using the lists’ hiding rules, including ads that appear after the page has loaded.
- Empty boxes that blocked ad images, videos and frames would otherwise leave behind.
- YouTube ads: it removes the ad data from YouTube’s player responses, so pre-roll and mid-roll ads don’t play.
- Adblock Plus / EasyList filter syntax, plus extended rules:
:has-text,:upward,:remove,:style,:-abp-containsand:-abp-has.
Everything in one side panel
Click the green shield in the toolbar and the Quiet Blocker panel opens beside the page. It stays open while you browse and follows the tab you are on. It shows how many items were blocked on the page and in total, lets you choose Block ads, Cover ads or Off for the site, has the Blocking enabled everywhere switch, starts Block element, and lists the rules you saved for the site.
Filter lists
Filter lists are rule sets maintained by volunteers; Quiet Blocker is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. In the Chrome edition they are built into the extension and are as new as the version you have: a new version brings fresh lists, and the settings page shows the date they are from.
| List | What it blocks | On by default |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet Blocker fixes (built in) | Ads the public lists miss, e.g. the Outlook.com ad column | Yes |
| EasyList (EasyList authors) | Ads | Yes |
| EasyPrivacy (EasyList authors) | Trackers and analytics | Yes |
| Peter Lowe's list | Ad and tracking servers | Yes |
| Fanboy's Social | Social media buttons and trackers | Yes |
| Adblock Warning Removal | “You are using an ad blocker” messages | Yes |
| Fanboy's Annoyances | Pop-ups, newsletter boxes, chat widgets | No |
| EasyList Cookie | Cookie consent banners | No |
You can add any other list in Adblock Plus format by its https:// address; lists you add update every 4 days.
Block, hide or cover an element
If an ad slips through, click Pick an element in the panel, right-click it and choose Block element…, or press Alt+Shift+B. Pick the element, and Quiet Blocker suggests a rule that matches only that element, with a live check of how many elements it matches. Choose how many levels up to block, then Hide, Remove or Cover it, for this site or all sites.
If a site refuses to work with an ad blocker, choose Cover ads in the panel, for the whole site or this page only. The ads load, so the site’s check passes, but each one is covered by a grey box with a small Show button. Trackers are still blocked.
Tracking tag removal
Many links carry tags that tell a site where you came from. Quiet Blocker removes them from the address of pages you open: the 21 common utm_ tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and others) plus 20 named tags such as fbclid, gclid and msclkid. The rest of the address stays as it was: ?utm_source=news&id=5&fbclid=abc becomes ?id=5. Chrome can only remove tags by name, so a rare utm_ tag outside that list stays. You can turn this off in Settings.
-
No telemetry, no account
It sends no usage data, statistics or crash reports and never contacts a server of its own. Settings stay in your Chrome profile.
-
No “acceptable ads”
Everything the filter lists cover is blocked. Nothing is let through for paying advertisers.
-
Chrome blocks requests itself
Built on Manifest V3: Chrome stops ad and tracker requests from the extension's rules before they load, and ad elements are hidden, including ones that load later.
-
Removes empty ad boxes
The gaps that blocked ad images, videos and frames would leave behind are removed, so pages close up cleanly.
-
YouTube ads
Removes the ad data from YouTube's player responses, so pre-roll and mid-roll ads don't play.
-
Filter lists built in
Quiet Blocker fixes, EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Peter Lowe's, Fanboy's Social and Adblock Warning Removal are on by default. They come with each version; lists you add by address update every 4 days.
-
Tracking tags stripped from links
The 21 common utm_ tags plus fbclid, gclid, msclkid and 17 other named tags are removed from the addresses you open. Can be turned off.
-
Everything in one side panel
The toolbar shield opens a panel beside the page with the blocked count, Block ads / Cover ads / Off, the master switch and Block element. It follows the tab you are on.
-
Block element with a live check
Press Alt+Shift+B or right-click Block element…, pick the ad, choose what to match and how many levels up, then Hide, Remove or Cover it.
-
Cover ads on sites that detect blockers
Choose Cover ads for a site or a single page: ads load so its ad-blocker check passes, but each is covered by a grey box with a Show button. Trackers stay blocked.
-
Your filters, site lists and backups
Write your own filters, keep lists of sites where blocking is off or ads are covered, and save a backup. Backups move between the Firefox and Chrome editions.
No features match that search.
How to install
Quiet Blocker for Chrome is not in the Chrome Web Store yet (it is in Google’s review). Chrome installs extensions from anywhere else only as unpacked extensions: they stay installed through restarts, but they don’t update by themselves. You need Google Chrome 121 or newer on Windows, Mac or Linux.
- Click Download free on this page, fill in the short form and save the
.zipfile. - Unzip it to a folder that will stay where it is, for example
C:\Tools\quiet-blocker-chrome. Don’t delete the folder afterwards: Chrome runs the extension from it. - In Chrome, type
chrome://extensionsin the address bar and press Enter. - Turn on Developer mode (the switch at the top right).
- Click Load unpacked and choose the
quiet-blocker-chromefolder (the one withmanifest.jsonin it).
Then click the puzzle-piece (Extensions) button in the toolbar and pin Quiet Blocker, so its green shield stays visible, and reload any tabs that were already open.
Leave Developer mode on. Chrome may switch unpacked extensions off when it is turned off.
Microsoft Edge and Brave can load it the same way: edge://extensions or brave://extensions, Developer mode, Load unpacked.
Remove other ad blockers first (on chrome://extensions, click Remove under the other blocker), so two don’t run at once.
Coming from the Firefox edition? In Firefox, Quiet Blocker settings → Backup → Save backup; in Chrome, settings → Backup → Restore from backup. Your own filters, saved Block element rules, site lists and list choices come across.
Updating to a new version
An unpacked extension doesn’t update itself, so new versions are installed by hand. They also bring the newest built-in filter lists. Tick “Send me release notes” in the download form if you want an email when there is a new version.
- Download the new version from this page.
- Unzip it over the old folder, replacing its files.
- Open
chrome://extensionsand click the round Reload arrow on the Quiet Blocker card.
When the Chrome Web Store version is out: save a backup in Quiet Blocker settings, remove this unpacked copy on chrome://extensions, add the Store version, then restore the backup. The Store version updates itself.
Your settings are kept. If you remove the extension and load it again from a different folder, it starts with fresh settings; restore a backup in that case.
Side panel and settings
- Click the green shield in the toolbar to open the side panel. It shows how many items were blocked on the current page and in total.
- For each site, Block ads, Cover ads or Off; for Cover ads, Whole site or This page only. The page reloads by itself. On web apps such as Outlook, which change their address as you click around, choose Whole site.
- After Show on a covered ad, a small Cover chip in its top-right corner puts the box back; reloading the page does too.
- A Blocking enabled everywhere switch.
- Pick an element starts Block element; the rules you saved for the site are listed below it, each with a delete button.
- Settings: turn lists on or off, add a list by its address, turn tracking-tag removal on or off, write your own filters, keep lists of sites where blocking is off or ads are covered, and Save backup / Restore from backup.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| A site breaks or won’t load | Open the panel and choose Off for that site. |
| An ad still shows | Right-click it → Block element… |
| Nothing is hidden on a tab | Reload the tab: pages that were open before Quiet Blocker was installed need a reload. |
| Video ads play sound in Cover mode | Covered ads still load and run. Switch the site back to Block ads. |
Chrome and Firefox editions compared
| Firefox edition | Chrome edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Controls | Toolbar popup, plus a sidebar for Block element | One side panel with everything |
| Who blocks requests | The extension checks every request (Manifest V2) | Chrome, from the extension’s rules (Manifest V3) |
| Built-in lists | Downloaded from the maintainers every 4 days | Built into the extension; updated with each new version |
| Install and updates | Signed by Mozilla; updates itself | Load unpacked; a new version is installed by hand |
| Tracking tags | Every utm_ tag | The 21 common utm_ tags (Chrome removes tags by name only) |
| Network traffic | Filter-list downloads | None, unless you add a list by its address |
Everything else works the same: element hiding, extended rules, Block element, Cover mode, the YouTube ad remover and backups, which move between the two editions.
Known limits
- Rules that inject scripts (
+js()scriptlets),$redirect,$rewriteand$csp, pop-up rules and a few rare extended selectors (:xpath(),:matches-css(),:remove-class()) are skipped, as in the Firefox edition. - Chrome caps the rules an extension can add itself at 30,000. That covers My filters plus lists you add by address; the settings page says if some did not fit.
- Some “ad blocker detected” walls can only be beaten with scriptlets. For those, use Block element → Remove on the wall; scrolling is unlocked automatically.
- Hover-picking works in the main page. To pick inside an embedded frame, right-click inside it and choose Block element….
- Covered ads still load and run, so a video ad may still play sound under its box.
- YouTube sometimes changes how it delivers ads; if pre-roll ads come back, a new version of Quiet Blocker is needed.
- Desktop Chrome only. There is no Safari or mobile version.
