  • Windows (64-bit) 10 – 11

Mgwalk Terminal is an SSH terminal for Windows that keeps your servers, tabs and files in one window. Save every server once, open it in a tab with one click, group the tabs per project, browse and edit the server's files over SFTP next to the shell, and keep a searchable log of every session. It is a desktop app: you install it on your PC, and it connects straight from your PC to your servers.

Who it's for

  • Developers and admins who live in SSH and juggle a dozen servers, each with its own folders and routine commands.
  • People who switch between a terminal and a separate file-transfer tool all day and would rather have both in one place.
  • Anyone running long jobs on remote machines (builds, imports, deploys, AI coding sessions) who wants to know the moment a background tab finishes.

Servers and connections

  • Saved servers with name, host, port, username and password, and auto login.
  • Passwords encrypted by Windows (Electron safeStorage, which uses the Windows data protection API for your user account). The app's window never receives a saved password: connections are made by the background process.
  • Categories in the sidebar, with sorting and search, and duplicate detection when you add or paste a server.
  • A colour per connection, shown on all its tabs, so production never looks like staging.
  • Host key check: asks before trusting a new server, and shows a red warning if a known server's key changes. Trusted servers can be reviewed and removed in Settings.
  • Auto-reconnect when the connection drops, with increasing delays and an immediate retry when the network comes back. Press R or Enter to reconnect now. You land back in the directory you were in.

Tabs, groups and the terminal

  • Multiple tabs: rename, close, minimise and restore.
  • Tab groups with a name and a colour. Show one group and minimise the rest.
  • Drag and drop to reorder tabs, move them into or out of a group, or move a whole group.
  • Tabs, groups and each tab's directory are remembered between sessions.
  • Background activity alerts: a spinner while a tab is busy, a green dot plus a Windows notification and a flashing taskbar button when it finishes, and a yellow dot for a terminal bell. Click the notification to open that tab.
  • Two clipboard styles: select-to-copy with right-click paste, or the usual Windows Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V. Pick one in Settings.
  • Find in scrollback (Ctrl+Shift+F) with match count, match case and regular expressions.
  • Ctrl+click links to open them in Firefox (with a choice of profile), Chrome, your default browser, or copy them. Your last choice comes first.
  • Adjustable font size.

Files panel (SFTP)

  • Ctrl+Shift+E opens the server's files beside the terminal, over the same connection. Breadcrumbs or a typed path, and it can follow the terminal's current directory.
  • Filter, sort and show hidden files. Multi-select and full keyboard control (arrows, Enter, Backspace, Delete, F2, F5, Ctrl+A).
  • Upload by drag and drop or a file picker, download files and whole folders, each transfer with its own progress bar and a cancel button.
  • New folder, rename, delete, copy path, and "cd here" to send the terminal to a folder.
  • Edit on the server: text and code files open in VS Code, and every save uploads the file back automatically. Other files open with their Windows default app. The editor and the file types are set in Settings.

Directories, scripts, snippets and logs

  • Saved directories per connection: one click opens a tab already in that folder.
  • Scripts per connection: change to a directory and run your commands, for example a deploy or a log tail. A script can ask for the directory or command when it runs.
  • Copy, edit and share directories, scripts and connections as JSON.
  • Ctrl+Shift+P opens a searchable list of named commands. Enter pastes the command; Ctrl+Enter pastes and runs it.
  • Built-in snippets for everyday shell housekeeping (reload or reset ~/.bashrc, reset the terminal) and Claude Code snippets (install or update, continue a session, start a new one).
  • Add, edit and delete your own.
  • Each tab can log its session to Documents\Mgwalk Terminal\Logs\<connection>\, one file per session, in a folder you can change.
  • Turn logging off for everything, or start and stop it per tab.
  • Logs viewer (Ctrl+Shift+L): logs grouped by connection with date, duration and size; search all logs or one connection (match case, regular expressions); click a result to jump to the line; find in a log with Ctrl+F; copy, open in VS Code, show in folder, or delete. Logs that are still being written update live.

Your data stays on your PC

Mgwalk Terminal has no account to sign in to, no cloud sync and no usage tracking. Servers, settings, trusted host keys and the log index live in your Windows profile (%APPDATA%\mgwalk-terminal), session logs in your Documents folder. The app talks to the servers you connect to, and to nothing else.

  • A full-window Settings screen: General, Terminal, Connections, Files, Session logs, Trusted servers, Directories and Scripts.
  • Backup and restore everything in one file. Saved passwords are only included when you set a backup password, and are then encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key derived from that password. The current data is copied aside before a restore.
  • Window size and position are remembered.
  • Saved servers, encrypted passwords

Name, host, port, username and password, with auto login. Passwords are encrypted by Windows for your user account and are only decrypted in the app's background process when it connects; the window never sees them.

  • Tabs and tab groups

Colour-coded groups, drag-drop reordering, minimise everything outside the current group. Tabs, groups and each tab's directory come back after a restart.

  • Background job alerts

A spinner while a background tab is busy; a green dot, a Windows notification and a flashing taskbar button when it finishes. Click the notification to jump to the tab.

  • Host key checking

Asks before trusting a new server and warns in red when a known server's key changes. Review and remove trusted servers in Settings.

  • Auto-reconnect

Reconnects with increasing delays and as soon as the network returns, keeps the tab and its log, and returns to the last directory. R or Enter reconnects now.

  • Files panel (SFTP)

Browse, filter and sort the server's files beside the terminal; upload by drag-drop, download folders, follow the terminal's directory, full keyboard control.

  • Edit on the server in VS Code

Open a remote text or code file in VS Code (or your editor); every save is uploaded back automatically.

  • Snippets palette

Ctrl+Shift+P: searchable named commands. Enter pastes, Ctrl+Enter pastes and runs. Built-in shell and Claude Code snippets, plus your own.

  • Saved directories and scripts

One-click directories per connection, and scripts that cd somewhere and run your commands, optionally asking for the directory or command first.

  • Searchable session logs

One log file per session, and a viewer to search all logs or one connection (match case, regex), jump to a line, and watch live logs update.

  • Backup and restore

Everything in one file. Passwords are included only with a backup password and are encrypted with AES-256-GCM.

  • Find and links

Find in scrollback with count, case and regex; Ctrl+click a link to open it in Firefox (with profile), Chrome or your default browser.

Installation and requirements

System requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit (x64).
  • About 300 MB of disk space for the app.
  • For edit-on-server: VS Code, or any other editor you choose in Settings > Files.
  • Servers: any SSH server that accepts password or keyboard-interactive login. Following the terminal's directory in the Files panel works on Linux servers.

1. Download the installer

Sign in and open My Licences & Downloads. Your Mgwalk Terminal licence has a Download button for the latest version you are entitled to, and your licence key.

2. Run the installer

  1. Run Mgwalk-Terminal-Setup-<version>.exe.
  2. If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, check that the publisher and file name are what you downloaded, then Run anyway.
  3. Choose the install folder. The app installs for your Windows user only; no administrator rights are needed.
  4. Desktop and Start menu shortcuts are created.

3. Activate

On first start, paste your licence key. The PC is registered as one of the licence's devices. The app keeps working offline; it re-checks the licence now and then when it is online.

4. Add your first server

Click + in the sidebar, enter a name, host, port, username and (optionally) password, and connect. The first time, the app shows the server's host key fingerprint and asks whether to trust it.

Updating

Download the newer installer from My Licences & Downloads and run it over the existing install. Your servers, settings and logs are kept: they live in %APPDATA%\mgwalk-terminal and your Documents folder, not in the install folder.

Moving to a new PC

Settings > General > Backup creates one file with everything. Set a backup password to include saved passwords (they are encrypted with it). On the new PC, install the app, restore the backup, and deactivate the old PC in My Licences & Downloads if you no longer use it.

Uninstalling

Use Windows Settings > Apps. Your data in %APPDATA%\mgwalk-terminal and your session logs are not deleted, so a reinstall picks them up. Delete those folders by hand to remove everything.

Licence and privacy

Licence

Mgwalk Terminal is commercial software from TGL Properties, LLC (Magento.zip). Each licence lets one person use it on up to 3 Windows PCs. The full licence agreement is shown by the installer and in the app under Settings > About.

Privacy

The app has no telemetry and no cloud sync. The only data it sends to Magento.zip is the licence check: licence key, a random device ID, the app version and the Windows version. Everything else (servers, passwords, settings, host keys, session logs) stays on your PC.

Open-source components

Mgwalk Terminal is built with open-source software, used under their licences: Electron and Chromium, xterm.js, ssh2, React and their dependencies (MIT, BSD and similar permissive licences). The full notices ship with the app.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a subscription? What happens when the 12 months of updates end?
No. You pay once, and the app keeps running and never switches itself off. After the 12 months of updates you just stop receiving newer versions until you renew updates from My Licences & Downloads.
Can I return it?
Yes. You can return Mgwalk Terminal for a full refund within 14 days of purchase, for any reason. Ask through the contact page with your order number; the refund goes back to your card, and the licence is revoked and its PCs are deactivated.
On how many PCs can I use it?
One licence is for one person on up to 3 Windows PCs, for example a desktop, a laptop and a work machine. Deactivate a PC in My Licences & Downloads to free its place, and buy one licence per person.
Does it need an internet connection?
Only to reach your servers. The licence is checked online now and then; if the check can't reach us, the app keeps working as normal.
What data does the app send to Magento.zip?
Only the licence check: your licence key, a random device ID created on install, the app version and the Windows version. No server names, hosts, commands, files or logs.
Where are my passwords stored?
In %APPDATA%\mgwalk-terminal, encrypted by Windows for your user account. They are decrypted only inside the app's background process at the moment it connects, and they are never sent to us.
What is written to the session logs?
The text the terminal shows, as plain text files in your Documents folder; passwords typed at a password prompt are not shown by the server, so they are not logged. Anything that does appear on screen is, such as a password typed as part of a command or a configuration file you display. Turn logging off in Settings or per tab, or choose a log folder outside a cloud-synced Documents folder.
Does it support SSH keys?
Not yet: this version logs in with a password or keyboard-interactive login.
Does it work on macOS or Linux?
No. Mgwalk Terminal is made for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit).
Can I move my setup to another PC?
Yes: back up in Settings, restore on the other PC, and deactivate the old PC in My Licences & Downloads if you no longer use it. Saved passwords are included only if you set a backup password.
